Bollywood and Cricket have crossed paths on various platforms. Be it for their movie promotions, be it for IPL or cricketers linked with Bollywood actresses – Cricket and Bollywood have, are and will always be in close proximity till eternity.

Indian cricketers have been linked to Bollywood actresses by many tabloids and cupid has even got few married. But how have these partnerships worked out for the cricketers and their careers? Let’s have a look –

1. Mohammed Azharuddhin and Sangita Bijlani–

This duo got its fair share of press and the rumors were splashed all over the newspapers. It quickly became clear that this was not the typical passing affair that is commonplace between actresses and cricketers.  Things seemed serious between Sangeeta and Azhar and the smitten cricketer decided to divorce his wife of eight years, Naureen, to marry Bijli. His teammates though really didn’t like the kind of influence Mrs. Azhar was beginning to have on him as they felt he concentrated more on her than the game leading the Indian team to lose matches on many occasions.

2. Yuvraj Singh and Kim Sharma/Deepika Padukone –

Yuvraj Singh does have that shade of ‘Casanova’ image which has led him to be linked with more bollywood actresses than almost any other cricketer in the last decade. From his long relationship with Kim Sharma to a minor affair with Riya Sen and the latest link with Deepika Padukone a few years ago have all brought up questions over the player’s commitment towards the sport. Deepika is still, fairly or unfairly, been labeled as one of the reasons for Yuvraj’s dip in form and looking how things are, it might always stay that way.

3. Nawab Pataudi and Sharmilla Tagore –

It’s not always that a relationship between a cricketer and a Bollywood actress makes the player’s career go south. We’ve a very good example of Mansoor Ali Pataudi and Sharmilla Tagore who are one of the most lovable couples in the game. Pataudi was a famous cricketer and had a great bonding with Sharmilla Tagore, who was the most cherished of Satyajit Roy’s actor. The couple got married on 27th December 1969. They are the most cherished couple and both of them have excelled in their own respective fields.

4. Sourav Ganguly and Nagma –

The Bengal Tiger, Sourav Ganguly allegedly had a relationship with South Indian star Nagma. In 2001, the rumors really caught air and where everywhere in the tabloids. Some even went on to sling mud at Dada’s marriage with Dona and reported that he was even married Nagma. After many years, Nagma did accept that there was something going on between the two but slated the break up as – “There was a career at stake, besides other things, so one they had to part.”

5. Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma –

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma have been the most talked about topic in India in the past few months. From Kohli flying to Barcelona to celebrate Anushka’s birthday with her to Anushka flying all the way to England to be with Virat Kohli during the England tour, nothing has escaped the media coverage. The fact that Virat Kohli has had a drop in his form, probably for the first time in his career too, has also been labeled as a result of the cricketer’s relationship with the Bollywood actress.

Now the on-field performances may or may not be related to their off-field relationships but a high-profile relationship between a cricketer and a Bollywood actress will always be under the scanner for the media to pounce on. Good or bad, there’s no escape from the media when you’re in this field and most of these stars will learned it the hard way.
