Trent Boult Feels Short Ball The Key To Alter Batsman’s Rhythm In Longer Run

New Zealand defeated Bangladesh in the first Test and pacer Trent Boult feels it was the bounce and reverse swing which did the trick for the hosts.

Boult said:

“A big positive from the Test match was that we got the ball to reverse swing eventually.”

Trent Boult, one of New Zealand’s three seam bowlers in the Test, called the shorter length delivery a pacer’s best bet, saying it helps to keep the batsman on back foot initially and later with some fuller lengths, the trick just works.

“I think the short ball is a valuable skill for a fast bowler. I think people have to realize why we are bowling short in the first place. It is to upset the batsman and get them struck on the crease to make the fuller ball more effective.”

Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh’s captain, was struck twice on his fingers before he was taken to hospital after being hit on the helmet by right-arm pacer Tim Southee. According to Boult, short pitch deliveries aren’t bowled to hurt the batsman but rather to make one’s skills more effective. Given the fact bouncers have been successful in the past, the delivery is best used to glide back the pressure back on batsman.

“When you are bowling a short ball it is definitely not with the intention of hurting the batsman but to make your other skills more effective. I think it is a method that we have been using successfully for a while. I am sure there will be short-pitched bowling among the group, looking to put pressure on the opponents.”

Bangladesh, who suffered a seven-wicket loss at the hands of New Zealand, will now look to rectify their mistakes. Visitors’ stand-in skipper Tamim Iqbal said there are no excuses for playing bounce not well and feels it’s a fair tactic to pitch it short to the batsman and extract wickets, even if it hurts them in the process.

Iqbal further added that bounce is expected in these conditions and they are all set to tackle it in the next Test.

“I think short ball is part of the game. I can’t really complain about it. If we feel that a certain batsman is not comfortable, we might use those tactics. It is fair game. I said in the last press conference, we expect these things in this part of the world. When New Zealand or any other team go to our conditions, they expect spin. I am sure they don’t complain about the ball spinning too much so why should we complain about bouncers?”

New Zealand will now face Bangladesh in the second Test at Christchurch, starting January 20.
