Ravi Shastri has been appointed as Team India’s new coach. The Cricket Advisory Committee had interviewed five candidates on Monday (July 10) but had deferred the decision of revealing the name of the new coach by stating that they were keen to take skipper Virat Kohli’s inputs before selecting Anil Kumble’s replacement.

Shastri was the front-runner the to bag the role that he missed last year and although reports had suggested that the likes of Tom Moody and Virender Sehwag had given quite impressive interviews, Shastri’s appointment was more or less expected especially after the way Kumble stepped down from his post last month, citing Virat Kohli’s reservations over his style of functioning. Last year, the CAC had not consulted anyone before appointing Kumble but made sure to take Kohli’s inputs this year- a clear indication that they were willing to appoint a man with whom the players share a good bond and Shastri certainly fits the bill.

He was a popular figure in the dressing room during his tenure as the team director between 2014 and 2016 and had enjoyed good success with the Men in Blue making it to the semi-final of World T20 as well as 50-overs World Cup in addition to winning Test series against Sri Lanka and South Africa. However, he also had some forgettable moments as the team lost an ODI series in Bangladesh for the first time and suffered the same fate against South Africa at home.

Not surprising then Shastri’s appointment was not taken in a very enthusiastic manner with the fans giving mixed reactions. Here are some of the reactions:

An avid sports lover, i always wanted to pursue a career in football. But just like the millions out there i did not put in the hard work needed to achieve my dream and now i have become a fan instead of the player. Anyway, writing for sports has kept me closer to this field. One more thing, yours sincerely is a die-hard Liverpool fan.
