Dilshan, in the year 1999 came into the national team as a lower order batsman who used to bowl off-spin. At the start of his career he concentrated more on bowling than batting but as years passed away, he was promoted in batting order thus ending up his career an opener of the Sri Lankan team.

The highest run scorer of 2011 world cup sometimes used to open the bowling for his team, thus contributing in all the departments of the game as he was a brilliant fielder too.
