Indian off-spinner R Ashwin wreaked havoc on the West Indies batsmen in the first Test and the first day of the second Test at Jamaica was no different. A pitch which has traditionally assisted pacers did not hamper Ashwin’s spirits as he dismantled the whole batting line-up. His second five-wicket haul in as many matches helped the visitors to dismiss the hosts for a paltry total of 196 and then take the driver’s seat in the match by ending the day on 125 for 1.
The West Indies batsmen looked totally clueless against Ashwin’s carrom balls. Jermaine Blackwood became Ashwin’s first scalp when he failed to read the ball’s line correctly and was given LBW. Marlon Samuels became Ashwin’s second victim. Ashwin bowled a flighted delivery which turned sharply. Samuels tried to flick it but did not get to the pitch of the ball and the ball after taking an inside edge of his bat ballooned to KL Rahul at silly point. Shane Dowrich was Ashwin’s third wicket. Ashwin again bowled a flighted delivery which turned a little. Dowrich, who was caught in two minds, wanted to leave it initially but then hanged his bat and the ball after taking a faint edge went to the wicketkeeper. Devendra Bishoo and Jason Holder became Ashwin’s fourth and fifth victims respectively.
