Street-smartness was one of the most important qualities of Mahendra Singh Dhoni that made him one of the finest captains to ever grace the game. Whether it was his unusual field placements, tactics or his unattractive but highly impressive batting, India’s most decorated skipper always managed to catch their opponents off-guard with his out of the box approach. And one such instance was witnessed when India was playing against the West Indies last year in Lauderhill.
MS Dhoni’s men were under immense pressure coming into the match as they needed to win the game to level the series. However, India’s hopes of equalising the series was fading away with every passing over as the West Indies batsmen were threatening to post a huge target. They had raced to 72 in nine overs and with the pitch providing little assistance to the bowlers. The Indians were finding it tough to get the breakthrough. But you can never take a team lightly which has Dhoni on its side. The Indian skipper finally combined with Ravichandran Ashwin to give his team the much-needed wicket.
Marlon Samuels and Lendl Simmons, who were facing Ashwin in the 10th over, were looking to work the balls on the leg-side by stepping out. Sensing an opportunity, Dhoni instructed the off-spinner to bowl a wide delivery and the move immediately paid dividends as Simmons was stumped out.
