India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is undoubtedly one of the smartest players of all time. Every now and then he comes up with mind-boggling innovations that leaves one and all surprised. Those ideas and innovations are not just limited to his batting and captaincy but also his wicketkeeping. And fans witnessed one such moment when India were playing a One-Day International against New Zealand in 2009 at Christchurch.
Batting first, India scored a mammoth score of 392 for the loss of 4 wickets with the help of a brilliant knock from Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. The batting maestro scored a majestic 163 runs and Yuvraj Singh along with Dhoni provided the finishing touch with quickfire fifty.
However, India were in a spot of bother when New Zealand were firing on all cylinders during their chase. In the 25th over, they were 179 for the loss of only one wicket. Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder added 166 for the first wicket and after the dismissal of McCullum, Ross Taylor came. With New Zealand in such a strong position, India needed a breakthrough to get into the match and the Indian skipper rose to the occasion. In the 25th over, Harbhajan Singh bowled a short of a length outside off. Taylor tried to pull it but failed to hit it cleanly and the ball after hitting his pad went Yuvraj. Taylor came out of the crease to steal a single and seeing that Yuvraj rocketed a perfect throw but Dhoni was in front of the stumps. However, giving an apt example of his street-smartness, Dhoni guided the ball towards the stumps without collecting it cleanly. India got the much-needed breakthrough and eventually won the match by 58 runs.
