Virat Kohli’s love-hate affair with the Australian fans is well known. The swashbuckling batsman might have earned their respect by playing brilliantly in Australia but that has not prevented the fans from getting involved in banter with the Indian Test skipper.
Playing the sport aggressively is the only way Kohli knows. He carries that with his body language in a very pronounced manner. Whether he is batting or fielding, he never shies away from expressing his emotions on the field.
The sweet-bitter relationship started when Kohli toured Australia for the first time in his career in 2011-12. He had infamously shown his middle finger to a hostile Sydney crowd during the 2011-12 tour but he immediately earned their respect by hitting a century in the very next game at Adelaide.
Almost four years after that another incident happened which might have made the dashing batsman disappointed. The incident happened in the last match of the four-match Test series at Sydney. Batting first Australia scored a mammoth 572. In reply, India scored 475 runs. In the second innings when Australian skipper Steve Smith was batting, the unfortunate event took place. Facing Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Smith lofted one very high. Kohli, who was standing at mid-on, ran hard back, dived but failed to stop the ball just eluded him, and then he lost his balance to end up escorting it for four after trying to stop it with his foot. The fans standing near the boundary started jeering Kohli by clapping and smiling at him.
