Video: When Merv Hughes said, 'A B, this little prick’s going to get more runs than you'

  • Sachin Tendulkar, who is known as the greatest crickter of the 21st century, has shared  rivalries with many great fast bowlers. Sachin in his 25 years long career had to face the fury the bowling greats like Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Courtney Walsh, Henry Olonga, Shoaib Akhtar, Glenn Mcgrath, Brett Lee and Dale Steyn.

Bowlers got success, but Sachin won the battle most of the times. They were enviable to Sachin’s prolific run scoring ability.

They used to think they had the weapon to get  Sachin’s wicket. Yes, they got success but Sachin figured out the technique to batter them.

Similarly, Australia  Craig McDermott got angry as the little star was battering the Aussie pacers in 1992, during India’s tour of Australia. The 18-year-old Sachin Tendulkar was hammering Australian bowlers. In one of the match at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Sachin pulled a sharply rising bouncer off McDermott for a four through square leg boundary. McDermott could not tolerate it he rushed to Sachin in follow-through and intimated the little master, “bastard come to Perth, I will see you there.”

In the five-match series, Sachin has already scored brilliant hundred (148) at Sydney Cricket Ground, which was his second Test hundred after his first hundred at Old Trafford, Manchester against England.

But, Sachin did not talk a single word in the  Melbourne Test. Sachin showed his character to McDermott at springboard pitch of W.A.C.A, Perth. At fast bowler’s paradise, McDermott was bowling with all fury in the World. His main target was the young Sachin Tendulkar. He bowled a fast rising bouncer and Sachin in a fitting reply to him pulled that bouncer over square leg for a massive six. The ball landed in the stands. In the whole Sachin thrashed McDermott through all part of the ground in similar fashion and notched up his third career hundred.

Another Aussie bowling star Merv Hughes was overwhelmed by the baby-faced Tendulkar’s deity. He while fielding said to his captain Allan Border, “A B, this little prick’s going to get more runs than you,”A prophecy, as we all know, that came true much later.  Sachin’s first three hundred came at the foreign shore.
