Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016/17: Tamil Nadu Trumps Baroda To Seal The Final Berth

The Tamil Nadu team sealed a great win over Baroda to seal a berth in the final for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016/17. All-round efforts from the players helped the team to trump Baroda, which was looking favourites before the start of the game.

The day started with Baroda skipper Irfan Pathan winning the toss and opting to bat first. Baroda openers were off to a slow and a lethargic start as though openers were able to keep the run-rate above four for the first 20 overs of the game but the numbers of dot balls were something that was a matter of concern as more than 50% of deliveries were dot balls in the first 20 overs.

Baroda paid the price for it later in the day as the middle order felt the pressure of a number of dot balls and later in order to increase the run-rate, the middle order crumbled and Baroda could just score 219 runs at the end of the day.

Washington Sundar and R Sai Kishore did well with the ball as Kishore scalped four wickets whereas Sundar kept the batsmen tied to the crease and bowled an economical spell of 7-1-20-2.

Tamil Nadu did not have a great start to the innings as they were two down on a score of 35. Baba Aprajith, the captain of India U23 and Dinesh Karthik then joined the forces to steer the team but Aprajith had a brain fade moment as he, out of nowhere looked to take on Soaeb Tai and handed an easy catch to Yusuf Pathan at Long on.

This partnership slowed down Tamil Nadu’s chase but skipper Vijay Shankar took the team to a score of 183, to slowly totter the hopes of Baroda bowlers.

It was the class act of Washington Sundar in the latter half of the day that sealed the game for Tamil Nadu as the former under 19 players smashed 26 runs off 23 balls to take the team to a win. His two sixes in an over of Tai were the highlight of Tamil Nadu innings as these sixes came at a moment when Tamil still needed 26 runs off 34 balls and these big hits eased of pressure from the shoulders of batsmen.

With this win, Tamil Nadu qualified for the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and will be meeting the winner of Bengal and Jharkhand game on Sunday (19 March) at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium.

Brief Score: Tamil Nadu 220/4(Dinesh Karthik 77, Vijay Shankar 53*; Atit Sheth 3-36) defeat Baroda 219 (Kedar Devdhar 46, Aditya Waghmode 45; R Sai Kishore 4-59)at Feroz Shah Kotla.
