Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017: MS Dhoni’s Fighting Knock In Vain As Bengal Beat Jharkhand To Set Up Summit Clash With Tamil Nadu

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s fighting knock of 70 runs went in vain as Bengal defeated Jharkhand by 41 runs to advance to the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Chasing an imposing target of 329, Jharkhand began poorly and were reeling at 99 for 3 and their situation could have been much worse had Ashok Dinda not dropped Dhoni at long off when he was batting on only six. The former India skipper fully capitalised after getting the reprieve as he added 53 run for the fourth wicket with Saurabh Tiwary before Dinda made amends for his costly drop by dismissing Tiwary for 48 to reduce Jharkhand to 153 for 4.  A 97-run partnership from only 75 balls between Dhoni and Ishank Jaggi revived Jharkhand’s hopes before the wicketkeeper-batsman was bowled by left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha. The 35-year old’s 70-run knock came off only 62 balls and was studded with two boundaries and four sixes. Eight runs later, the batting team suffered another deadly blow as Jaggi returned to the pavilion too after scoring 59 from only 43 balls. The writing was very much on the wall now as Bengal bowled out Jharkhand for 288 to advance to the final. Pragyan Ojha was Bengal’s most successful bowler with figures of 5 for 71 from his 10 overs.

Bengal will now take on Tamil Nadu in the final of the 50-over tournament on March 20 in Delhi.

Earlier, Bengal had put on a solid start after Jhakhand skipper MS Dhoni invited them to bat first, with in-form openers Shreevats Goswami and Abhimanyu Easwaran putting on a massive 198 runs for the first wicket. Fast-bowler Monu Kumar broke the huge stand by accounting for Goswami but before that the Bengal wicketkeeper-batsman had set the platform for a huge score by playing a knock of 101 runs from only 99 deliveries. Easwaran also completed his second century of the tournament soon before he was run out for 101. Captain Manoj Tiwary then scored 75* from only 49 balls to help his team fully capitalise on the good start. Agniv Pan (19 off 17) and Sudip Chatterjee (19 off 12) also played handy knocks as Bengal posted a massive total of 329 for 4 in the allotted 50 overs. Varun Aaron was Jharkhand’s most successful bowler with two wickets but he was also the most expensive bowler after conceding 89 runs from 10 overs.
