Saurabh Tiwary’s fighting ton went in vain as Hyderabad defeated Jharkhand by 21 runs to register their fourth win on the trot in the ongoing Vijay Hazare tournament.
Chasing 204, MS Dhoni’s side made a disastrous start as Anand Singh and Virat Singh returned to the hut even without opening their account to leave the team reeling at 0 for 2 before Ishan Kishan (20) and Saurabh Tiwary (102) calmed down the nerves with a 34-run partnership.
But just when it was looking like the batsmen have settled, C Milind trapped Ishan Kishan to pile more misery on the batting side. Ishank Jaggi (17) also failed to make a mark as Jharkhand were reduced to 68 for 4 before Saurabh Tiwary and MS Dhoni began the rescue work. The duo added 64 runs for the fifth wicket before the former India skipper was dismissed for 28 by Mehdi Hasan. After removing Dhoni, the left-arm spinner took two wickets in quick succession to leave Jharkhand reeling at 140 for 7. Saurabh Tiwary tried his best to take him team home by scoring his second century of the tournament but Mohammed Siraj dismissed the left-handed batsman to end Jharkhand’s hopes. MS Dhoni’s side was eventually dismissed for 182 as they suffered their second defeat in five matches.
Earlier, Hyderabad had got off to a poor start after MS Dhoni invited them to bat first. Aksath Reddy (9) was the first batsman to be dismissed when he was run out by Rahul Shukla before Jaskaran Singh sent back Tanmay Agarwal (11) to reduce Hyderabad to 30 for 2 in the seventh over. An 82-run partnership between Kolla Sumanth (48) and Bavanaka Sandeep (43) for the third wicket steadied the ship but they fell off the track after Sumanth was dismissed by Shahbaz Nadeem.
15 runs later, Nadeem struck again to dismiss Hyderabad skipper S Badrinath to leave them reeling at 127 for 4. The left-arm spinner was not done yet and added another wicket to his kitty by castling Sandeep. With wickets falling at regular intervals, Badrinath’s men eventually huffed and puffed to 203 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs. Nadeem was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 27 in 9 overs.
