Virat Effect? BCCI Asks Ravi Shastri To Apply For Post Of Head Coach?

As what can be seen as an effect of  Virat Kohli, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly asked Ravi Shastri, one of the close one of Virat Kohli, to apply for the post of Head Coach of Indian cricket team after the exit of Anil Kumble. Though Shastri has also made it clear that he will only apply if he is guaranteed the job,

“It is no secret that skipper Virat Kohli wants Shastri back at helm and Shastri was spoken to so that he applies for the interview process, but the former team director isn’t willing to be in a position where his claim is rejected again. He has made it clear that he will speak to the BCCI or CAC on this matter only if he is given a guarantee that he will be handed the job. There is no question of joining a queue and hoping that he is considered for the post,” a BCCI official told Cricketnext.

This is the latest progress in the search for new Head Coach of Indian cricket team as earlier, BCCI advertised for the post but received only six applications due to Anil Kumble, who was the coach at that time. The news of the rift between Kohli and Kumble came soon after but with Kohli quashing all the news of rift between the two ahead of first game of Champions Trophy, many of the former cricketers were reluctant to apply for it as Kumble had done wonderful job with the team and in no case, he was to be removed – keeping in mind the performance of Indian team in past one year, where they won 13 out of 17 Test matches played, with only loss coming to against Australia at Pune.

Still, the differences between Kohli and Kumble emerged as the winner in the end and the former Indian skipper stepped down from the post, due to the untenable relationship between him and Kohli.

This clearly means that Kohli is looking for a person who is close to him and Ravi Shastri is the go-to man for him like we have seen in past. Last year, Shastri was one of the applicants for the post but lost the race to Kumble. Later, he did make it an issue citing nepotism the main reason behind this but now, it will be difficult for Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI to ignore Kohli’s suggestion as last year they did it, and as a result, Kumble resigned from the post with just one year in service.

However, BCCI is yet to officially invite more applications for the job and surely with what is transpiring now, the apex board might soon ask for more applications and that time, the weight age will be given to Ravi Shastri, whose strongest competitor will be Virender Sehwag – who was asked by the skipper Kohli himself to apply  for the post.
