Virat Kohli Lauds Niroshan Dickwella for His Competitive Skills in the Opening Test

Team India skipper Virat Kohli is known as someone who never shies away from taking a dig at their oppositions verbally. He never gives an inch to the opposition and is often seen involving in heated banters with the opposition players. During the opening Test against Sri Lanka, Kohli was again in the thick of things during the final day of the Test.

Sri Lanka who was chasing an unlikely victory target of 231 was staring down the barrel and was facing a defeat when wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella defied the Indian bowlers with his flamboyant strokeplay. He also used time-wasting tactics during the fag end of the match while the lights were also fading at the Eden Gardens.

Kohli was seen having an animated chat with umpires Nigel Llong and Joel Wilson regarding Dickwella’s tactics. Despite the banter, Kohli lauded Dickwella for his competitiveness as the match ended in a thrilling draw. Dickwella also had an altercation when Mohammed Shami when he stopped the bowler in his run-up. Shami went up to the southpaw and apparently said that he was a local boy to which Dickwella said that he doesn’t give a damn.

“I like to see that character. I liked that competitiveness on the field. He (Dickwella) is someone who takes a lot of pride in his cricket. I was impressed with what I have seen so far from the last series as well,” Kohli said about Dickwella.

“He has got great ability to do something very special for Sri Lankan cricket. I like to see that competitiveness on the field. In the heat of things, I will do anything for my team to win. Afterwards, we had a normal chat, and on the flight as well. Those things end on the field. When you are competitive as an opponent, we always respect that about any opponent. He is a very feisty character and that works for his game. Credit to him for maintaining that and I am sure he will do many good things in Sri Lankan cricket.”
