Virat Kohli To Miss Limited Overs Series Against Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma to Captain

Team India skipper Virat Kohli is expected to get the much-needed rest ahead of the tough South African tour during the 2nd half of the Sri Lanka series. He is almost certain to miss out the limited-overs leg, and Rohit Sharma is expected to take the captaincy for the 3 ODI’s and T20I’s. Meanwhile, lanky speedster Jasprit Bumrah will also be fighting for a spot with Kuldeep Yadav for the Test series in South Africa.

The National Selection Committee will announce four separate squads. One will be for the 3rd and the final Test against Sri Lanka while the rest two will be for the limited overs series against Sri Lanka followed by the big one for the South Africa series. It must be noted here that Kohli has been playing non-stop cricket since the IPL and is expected to get a month’s break to prepare himself for the tough tour of South Africa. The break is necessary for Kohli to recharge his batteries and spend some quality time with friends and family.

If Kohli also decides to opt out from the 3rd Test against Sri Lanka scheduled to be played in his home ground in New Delhi, Ajinkya Rahane might take charge. However, the main focus will be on the team for the South African tour which will be the first tough tour for India under Kohli against in overseas conditions.

Jasprit Bumrah

The team combination will be a most sought after topic and whether the team management decides to stick with four pacers and three spinners or go with five quicks with a couple of spinners remains to be seen. Jasprit Bumrah who has already become one of the main bowlers for India in limited overs cricket will be in contention for the 5th pacers spot. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma are expected to be an automatic choice for the series.

Navdeep Saini of Delhi could be in the reckoning if the three-man selection committee wants any surprise element. There is a thought that with Hardik Pandya being in the team India might include an extra wrist spinner in the squad among Kuldeep Yadav or Yuzvendra Chahal.

The top order looks pretty settled and barring a dilemma over the openers’ slot the batting line-up looks solid. The seven batsmen including three openers and four middle-order batsmen are the automatic choices.

Meanwhile, there shouldn’t be any surprises for the limited overs squad against Sri Lanka. Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey are expected to be back while Mohammed Siraj And Basil Thampi might be selected for the T20I series keeping the future in mind. The selection meeting will take place after the 4th day’s play between India and Sri Lanka in the 2nd Test.
