WI v Aus Review – Reasons why West Indies struggled in Test matches against Australia

Before the series began West Indies selectors dropped key batsman Shivnarne Chanderpaul for the 2 Test matches against Australia. The West Indies team were facing a tough ask against the Australians. In the 2 Test matches against Australia the West Indies team struggled to cope with Australian team and lost both of the Test matches easily.

West Indies batting has struggled in Test matches against top teams and against top quality bowling line up. In the first Test match in Dominica West Indies were bowled out for 148. None of the batsmen were able to put a big score to put pressure on the bowling line up of Australia. The West Indies bowling looked impressive before Adam Voges scored an important century. In the second innings West Indies did not start well. Marlon Samuels and Dowrich put a brilliant partnership before the Australian team picked wickets at regular intervals to bowl out West Indies for 216 giving Australia a target of 47. Australia won the match by 9 wickets.

In the second Test match at Jamaica, West Indies began off to a good start picking 2 early wickets but good partnership between Clarke and Smith steadied the innings. Smith scored a brilliant 199 and helped Australia to post a competitive total of 399. In reply West Indies got off to a poor start losing wickets at regular intervals. At one stage they were struggling at 143 for 8 before Holder played a wonderful innings of 82 not out. West Indies were bowled out for 220 giving Australia a lead of 179. In Australia’s second innings, David Warner and Shaun Marsh scored quickly. Smith continued his form and scored an brilliant 54. Australia declared the innings at 220 for 2 giving West Indies a target of 392. West Indies second innings got off a bad start losing 2 early wickets. On the fourth day Australia bowled out West Indies for 114. Australia won the match by 277 runs and takes the series 2-0.

The West Indies team needs to find a batsmen who have a solid technique to play good quality bowling. Australia looked a far superior team in the Test series. West Indies was outplayed in all departments. Their performances in Test matches have been poor. It is a cause of concern for the West Indies cricket as they are looking like a T-20 side and ODI team.
