The Story
Stellar performances in the ICC Women’s World Cup has not only helped Harmanpreet Kaur gain a great amount of recognition and respect, it has also made her thoroughly deserving of another sort of rewards as well.
Batter Harmanpreet Kaur, who hit a historic century India overcome defending champions Australia and enter the final of the Women’s World Cup, is set to receive a handsome promotion from Western Railways. The 28-year-old grabbed the headlines with her unbeaten 171 off just 115 balls.
Recommendations on the way
It has been reported that the Mumbai division of Western Railway (WR) has urged the Railway Board to promote Harmanpreet Kaur. The vice-captain of the Indian team is currently employed as Chief Office Superintendent in Mumbai.
“Certainly, we would recommend her name to the Railway Ministry for promotion. We will also felicitate her when she comes back home,” said Ravinder Bhakar, chief PRO of WR, on Saturday.
“Whenever our players show excellence or perform outstandingly in international events, we recommend their names for promotion,” he said.
Railways, the breeding ground for young women talent
Sunil Udasi, who heads the committee that selects members of Railways’ women cricket team proudly reflected the fact that most of the successful women cricketer in recent times have emerged from the railways. The officials claimed that the state-run transport undertaking has always focussed on nurturing the players and provides proper training.
“Railways women cricketers have always been in the forefront and the current national team is no exception. As many as 10 players from the current 15-member team taking part in the World Cup are from Railways.
“This is due to the robust domestic schedule and facilities such as 330 days special leave for dedicated training being provided by the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB),” he told PTI.
Udasi, who is also chief PRO of Central Railway, said the RSPB has undertaken various initiatives to impart regular training to players and prepare them for international events.
The claims made by the senior officials are true in every sense as apart from Harmanpreet, other high profile names like skipper Mithali Raj, Ekta Bisht, Punam Raut, Veda Krishnamurthy, Poonam Yadav, Sushma Devi, Mona Meshram, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Nuzhat Parween all have association with Railways.
