Virat Kohli who is currently one of the leading cricketers of the game has been batting at no.4 in the ODI’s in the ongoing Carlton Mid-ODI Tri-Series. India has played 3 matches, 1 was washed out but in that match too he batted at 4 as India had lost 2 wickets before the match was called off. So, he has batted 3 times in the series and during those three times Virat Kohli has come out to bat at no.4. Why?

Virat Kohli has had a dream run at no.3 position, so why does MS Dhoni wants to experiment with his position with the World Cup not even a month from now? India have 3 openers in their side, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane. In the World Cup, mostly the opening combination will be Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. MS Dhoni will have to think of whether to go with Rahane at 3 or Kohli at 3. Personally, I feel Virat Kohli should bat at no.3 as it has always been his place. He looks a completely different player when he bats at no.3. If the first wicket falls early, Virat Kohli comes up and anchors India’s innings while he can also come after a good first wicket partnership and lift the run rate.

In the last two matches where India didn’t have the services of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli still came to bat at no.4 as Ambati Rayudu batted at 3. Is this Kohli’s decision or Dhoni’s, no one knows as of now. Is Ambati Rayudu going to carry the pressure of batting at no.3 all through the World Cup? Ambati Rayudu is a youngster and India should utilize him as a finisher rather than give him an important position like no.3. Virat Kohli has justified his place at no.3 and he should continue to play at 3 in whatever circumstances.

Virat Kohli batted at no.4 even in the 2011 World Cup as there too India had 2 openers, Sehwag, Tendulkar and Gambhir. However, that time was different. Kohli was just settling in to the Indian team and wasn’t matured to handle that position which Gautam Gambhir did exceptionally well. Same goes with Ambati Rayudu or Ajinkya Rahane. If India is thinking of them as their no.3 batsmen, they require time and there is ample time available to experiment after the World Cup. However, for now Virat Kohli should be batting at no.3 and not no.4
