We will play for pride – M. Vijay

Like most of the other IPL seasons, this season of the IPL too had a similar tale with regards to the Kings XI Punjab. The side looked utterly clueless for a majority of the tournament, with their batting and bowling departments hardly complementing and integrating. The results finally seemed to be a little positive when M. Vijay was promoted to captaincy. But by the time that happened, it had already been too late.
In their game against Sunrisers Hyderabad last evening, the Kings XI once again failed to defend a sizeable score. The Kings XI bowlers had no answers to stop David Warner at the top. Post Warner’s wicket, it was Yuvraj Singh, who stole the show with his blistering cameo to guide the Sunrisers home.
Post his side’s loss, skipper M. Vijay admitted that the Kings XI would now play for pride. “We got to put up a show because individually and as a team we have a lot at stake,” Vijay said. “For pride’s sake, we’ve got to play there and put up a good show against RCB and one more game in the end, against Pune. Hopefully, we can put up a good show.”
Praising South African opener Hashim Amla for his spectacular knock of 96, Vijay said, “He is a world class player and the way he played on this kind of wicket is really great to watch from outside. And lots of things to learn from him. Obviously, to come up on the wrong side in the end (you feel) a little sad for him and for his knock. Hopefully, we can take it on the chin and play a couple of more games with a lot more pride,” said Vijay.
Concluding on a note of optimism, Vijay said, “I personally thought we have a good set up. We have a good bunch of guys who could win matches in their own right. It didn’t click for us this season. We can take the positives from this season and come back and play better cricket next season.”
