Wriddhiman Saha Is Better Gloveman, Can Do Well In Helping Virat Kohli In DRS: Aakash Chopra

Former cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra is impressed with the Wriddhiman Saha’s wicket-keeping ability by saying his contribution behind the stumps has played an important role for the side before saying Decision Review System should take care off as skipper Virat Kohli needs to be more judicious with the DRS.

However, Chopra got it wrong by stating Indian skipper got 30 decisions right out of 39 reviews which is factually wrong. So far Kohli has reviewed only nine successful DRS reviews.

“One area that gets little attention but plays an important role is the utilisation of the reviews. Kohli has used the review 39 times ever since India has started using the technology to review on-field umpires’ decisions, but he got it right only 30 [9] times,” Aakash Chopra wrote.

The Uttar Pradesh-born Aakash, who had played 10 Tests for India reiterated that it will take Indian skipper Virat Kohli time to get used to the methodology of the DRS while challenging the decision.

“During fielding, Saha becomes the most important person to guide Kohli and while his glovework has been admirable, his contribution in assisting his skipper is negligible,” Chopra mentioned.

However, Chopra stated wicket-keeper batsman Saha is at the important position to help out his skipper while calling for a review.

“It’s not about seniority or having a powerful voice in a team’s eco-system but about being at the right place, and nobody is in a better position than Saha. He must have a definitive voice in guiding the skipper,” Chopra further said.

Chopra, who had played 162 first class games, said a player has to be 100 per cent sure otherwise it would be a waste of a review as most of the times it turns out to be standing umpire’s call.

“The fundamentals of the prevailing system is that unless you are 100 per cent sure, do not refer a leg-before decision. For, nine times out of 10 it will be the umpire’s call,” Chopra said in his write-up.

Chopra remarked India would come back hard in the ongoing Bengaluru Test against Australia after a humiliating 333-run loss in Pune which was termed ‘poor’ by ICC’s match referee Chris Broad.

“Reaching the summit is tough but staying there is tougher and India have the next five days to show the world why they are at the top of the ICC’s Test rankings,” Chopra revealed.

After India trailed by 1-0 in the four-match Test series, Chopra said Australians came well prepared as they practiced roughed-up pitches at ICC Academy in Dubai.

“After India’s astounding success over the last 18 months and Australia’s woeful recent record in the sub-continent, who would have thought that India would reach Bangalore trailing 0-1. But since that is indeed the case, there’s added spice in the contest,” Chopra concluded.

Chopra made his international debut in 2003 and played his last international game against New Zealand in 2004.

Australia is leading the four-match Border-Gavaskar Test series 1-0.
