You Can’t Think Of An All-Time India XI Without Considering Yuvraj Singh – Rahul Dravid

Congratulating Yuvraj Singh on playing his 300 One-Day Internationals, former India skipper Rahul Dravid said the stylish left-hander, who has enjoyed a phenomenal career at the highest stage of the game for close to two decades, would “make most people’s all-time one-day XI”.

Yuvraj became only the fifth Indian player after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin to enter the 300-club when he stepped out on the field during India’s Champions Trophy semifinal clash against Bangladesh on Thursday (June 15).

“He is obviously superstar of Indian cricket. You can’t think of an all-time India 11 without considering Yuvraj Singh very seriously. He will make most people’s all time one day 11, the performances he’s had over the last 17 years,” Dravid told ESPNCricinfo.

The 35-year old made his One-Day International debut as a 19-year-old in the second edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2000 and made an immediate impact by scoring a scintillating 84 against the mighty Australians in his second game. In the semifinal, he once again impressed by scoring a quickfire 41, as India defeated defending champions South Africa to qualify for the final where they lost to New Zealand.

Recalling that tournament, Dravid further said:

“Just going back to that game in 2000, when we played in the Champions Trophy when he first came in, it was incredible. We had seen a little bit of him in the under-19, we had played challenger trophy against him and we could see that he was an exciting talent. To just walk in against Brett Lee, and (Glenn) Mcgrath and Jason Gillespie and play the kind of innings that he did, was sensational.”

One of India’s greatest match-winners, Yuvraj had played integral roles in almost all of India’s famous wins in the last decade most notably during the World T20 and the 2011 World Cup where he was adjudged the Man of the Match. But his life had come to a standstill when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. But the Punjab star not only made a successful return from the illness but also made a remarkable comeback to the cricket field.

“He has had his ups and downs, physically, with the issues he has had with cancer and everything. But overall, I think his one-day cricket has been sensational, to be the player of the tournament in matches India wins,” concluded Dravid.
