Yuvraj Singh And MS Dhoni Need To Work Out Themselves If They Want To Play In 2019 World Cup, Says Adam Gilchrist

Former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist feels India, just like the other countries, should begin preparing for the next World Cup which is just a couple of years away. The Men in Blue finished runners-up in the recently-concluded ICC Champions Trophy and although they had put in some dominant performances throughout the tournament, it was very much clear that the team needs to work on some areas.

India’s spinners- Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja struggled to perform well throughout the tournament. With pitches being absolutely flat, Ashwin and Jadeja managed just 1 and 4 wickets respectively. On the other hand, India’s batting looked solid throughout except the final. India’s top-three- Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli- was among the top 5 leading run-scorers of the tournament and rarely left anything for the middle-order batsmen. However, once they failed to perform in the final, the middle-order too cut a sorry figure with Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav scoring 22, 4 and 9 respectively.

And while Gilchrist did not speak on the other areas, he felt India’s senior batsmen Yuvraj and Dhoni need to chalk out their plans at the earliest.

“India like the rest of the nations will have the challenge of working out what the right balance will be. Guys like Dhoni and Yuvi need to work out themselves if they have the motivation to continue that long. They need to be in conversation with the captain, the selectors and the board. I don’t think they need to make these decisions right now but they will be talking about them in the next couple of months to work out what the best direction is,” he told India Today.

The legendary wicketkeeper batsman’s comments have come just a few days after former India skipper Rahul Dravid had said the selectors needed to reassess Dhoni and Yuvraj’s role in the team.

“I am not going to tell them what to do. They will know. I have been through it myself and you know as a player if you have it in your heart, the desire to continue on and that’s the discussion they will be able to have (with selectors),” Gilchrist added.

Gilchrist further said that the duo’s role in the team will eventually depend on the selectors.

“It’s the selectors who pick the team. Unless the players pull out themselves. Who knows MS and Yuvi may do that,” he said.

Both the players, meanwhile, are currently in West Indies with the team for the upcoming ODI series beginning on Friday (June 23).
