Zimbabwe batsman pounded an unbeaten 162 for Mountaineers against Mashonaland Eagles in an Domestic T20 tournament, registering the second highest T20 individual score.
Masakadza, a veteran of 104 matches in the shortest format of the game, did not take long to press the accelarate button, smashing 16 runs off Tafadzwa Muzarawetu’s first over. The boundaries came at regular intervals, with the Zimbabwe opener notching up his fifty in just 24 deliveries.
His next 112 runs came off just 47 deliveries, in an innings in which he drilled 14 fours and 11 sixes. It was an onslaught of sorts, with a strike rate of 228.16 sparing no bowler, though Tanyaradzwa Munyaradzi (41 off 16 balls) and Chamu Chibhahbha (34 off 11 balls) came in for special treatment. Masakadza brought up his 150 in the 19th over with a couple, and smashed Munyaradzi for two sixes in the same over to overtake the likes of Luke Wright, Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum in the list of highest individual T20 scores.
Masakadza fell a mere 13 runs short of Chris Gayle’s 175 for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors India in the 2013 edition of the IPL. Masakadza’s blitz, coupled with a five-ball 22 run blast from Kudzai Sauramba, took Mountaineers to a mammoth 242 for 3. In reply, Mashonaland Eagles managed a paltry 107 for 9 from 12.1 overs in reply, giving Mountaineers a 125-run D/L win.
