Zimbabwe Cricket Recall Cricketers From Afghanistan’s T20 Shpazeega Cricket League

After the suicide bomber killed three and left around 12 people injured nearby Kabul International Stadium, the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), on Wednesday demanded an immediate return of its players from Afghanistan, who are concurrently participating in the ongoing edition of 2017 Shpageeza Cricket League (SCL).

The ZC spokesperson Darlington Majonga while talking to The Herald revealed that he told his counterparts in Afghanistan to allow Zimbabwe players return to its country, as soon as possible.

“Following today’s events, Zimbabwe Cricket has ordered that all Zimbabwean players who are in Afghanistan should be put on the first plane out of Kabul so that they return home,” Majonga was quoted as saying by the Herald.

It is pertinent to mention the Zimbabwe contingent in the war-torn country include senior campaigner and top-order batsmen Hamilton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda and middle-order batter Sean Williams followed by all-rounders in the form of Elton Chigumbura and Sikander Raza.

“We have communicated that with our counterparts in that country,” Majonga added.

The other national team players from Zimbabwe included Ryan Burl, Solomon Mire, Richard Ngarava, Richmond Mutumbami and right-arm fast bowler Tendai Chatara.

Interestingly, The Defenders side is coached by former England skipper Adam Hollioake and Knights is mentored by ex-first-class cricketer Andy Moles during the fifth edition of SCL.

However, the game between Defenders and Knights was interrupted following the chaos which further instilled fear among the spectators in the stadium in a high-scoring fixture.

The shocking incident took place at one of the checkpoints near the stadium where the sixth match of the competition was underway on Wednesday afternoon (September 13) between the Boost Defenders and MIS Ainak Knights. Photo Credit: AFP.

It’s the duty of the Board to push for the safety of the players; at any of the cost.

The game between Defenders and Knights also witnessed Zimbabwean players participating on Monday evening.

“They were part of nine players that were supposed to ply their trade in the T20 league,” the release form ZC remarked.

After the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the safety of all foreign players, the different nations are also in talks like Zimbabwe while considering the security of the players participating in the competition.

Several players are competing from Windies, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Oman and only player in the form of Shahid Afridi from Pakistan.

Earlier, the professional league kicked off on Monday (September 11) which was scheduled to be held in July, but owing to lack of preparation from the different franchises which eventually forced the management to defer the dates of the competition until September.

As Afghan cricket fraternity was keenly observing and looking forward to impressing the international players – the security lapse has hit the country in the heart of the city.

Moreover, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), has a lot to prove in the country, to make way for top-flight cricket while having a lone Stadium recognized by the world governing body ICC.
