The stage is all set. It’s going to be cracker Saturday with Liverpool playing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The match involves high stakes. It’s the encounter of the special one against the normal one. On one hand Klopp would want to make statement in England and Jose Mourinho would like to save his job.
It’s going to be the best treat that a football fan could ask for this Halloween. So in the light of this exciting encounter we have come up with the list for the five best Chelsea and Liverpool matches in the Premier League.
1. The Great Slip
No Liverpool fan can forget this moment. This was the moment when Gerrard let the cup ‘f******g slip’. In the last stages of the 2013/14 campaign Liverpool played Chelsea at home. Liverpool stood at the top of the table within touching distance of the cup but then the dream of winning that cup after 24 years just ‘slipped’. In a bad tackle Gerrard slipped and that allowed Demba Ba to score for the visitors and that wasn’t the end of their misery as Willian scored thanks to a cross by the Liverpool wonder boy Fernando Torres. As the commentator said ‘it wasn’t typically Gerrard’ and at the end of the 1st half the Reds captain was left standing alone.
2. A cannibalistic draw
This was Rafa’s return to Anfield against the club who he led to the European Championship. The match was played on 21st April 2013 and went to the wire with both teams scoring two goals each. What makes this match memorable apart from the fact that this was Rafael Benetiz’s first match at Anfield after he left the club was the cannibalistic nature of Luis Suarez came to the forefront. This was the match where Suraez bit into Branislav Ivonovic and later was handed a ban. In this match Suarez played the role of the hero as well as the villain. Thanks to his handball Chelsea scored their second putting them back in the lead after Oscar provided them their 1st goal in the 1st half. He later bit Ivonovic achieving new levels of villainy. But in a turnaround Suarez rose as a hero and later scored with the whistle to end the match in a 2-2 draw.
3. The 20 million euros affair
This was called the 20 million euros match as the team that won the match would occupy a place in the Champions League next season (2004/05). Now Chelsea might be a club tasting new levels of success (and downfalls!) but then the club had qualified for Europe’s most prestigious competition only on one prior occasion. This was a historical win for Chelsea that gave them a chance to play against Europe’s elite clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Chelsea came back from a 1 goal deficit to take the game away from the Reds. The match ended with the score being 2-1 in the favour of the Blues with Desailly and Gronkjaer scoring for them.
4. The FA cup revenge
Liverpool recorded a thumping of Chelsea in a masterclass display of football on 8th May 2012. Chelsea ha defeated Liverpool in the FA cup by 2-1 and in an answer to that defeat Liverpool hammered Chelsea at Anfiled with the full time score being 4-1. The scoring was started by an Essien own goal after which Liverpool scored in a regular fashion at 21’, 28’ and then 61’. The lone goal scored for Chelsea was by Ramires at 50’.
5. Torres’s debut against Liverpool
Everyone knows how thrilling and exciting Torres’s transfer from Liverpool to Chelsea was and to the drama was the fact that his first game for Chelsea would be against his former club. But his debut on 6 February 2011 did not turn out as the Chelsea fans would have hoped it would. Chelsea lost the match and Torres remained ineffective in the tie. He was booed by the same fans who revered his all those years and when Ancelloti decided to replace him in the 66th minute the crowd just couldn’t be happier.
