The first fixture marked by every Anfield faithful when the fixture list comes out in July is Manchester United’s trip to Anfield. The intense rivalry is almost upon us and the fans of both clubs just cant wait for the match to kick off. It is almost impossible for both sets of fans to cheer for the same player but it has happened many a times in the past.
A number of players represented both these top flight clubs over the years. Here are 5 popular players to have dared to play for both these clubs:
1. Michael Owen:
The pacey striker broke onto the scene at Liverpool in 1997 where he ended his first season with a call up for the England National team. Owen, known as one of the most prolific goal scorers of his time had an injury prone career but was able to reach heights some cant even think off. He has won 9 major trophies in his stellar career before moving away from Liverpool and joining Newcastle United. He then controversially made a move to United and looked he lost none of his charisma.
2. Paul Ince:
One of the best Mid-fielders in English football, Ince started his career with the Hammers who went down at the end of the season. West Ham were relegated and Ince moved on to Manchester United on 1989 to pick up on his career. He became the first choice for his club and his country but surprisingly moved to Inter Milan in 1995 for two seasons in Italy. He then returned back to Liverpool in an astonishing move and also scored against United in Liverpool’s un-forgettable treble winning run.
3. Tom Chorlton:
The first player to switch sides in this intense rivalry back in 1912, Tom Chorlton As an amateur he won the Lancashire Combination with Accrington Stanley in 1902-3 and finished runner-up the following season before signing for Liverpool. He could not find a regular place in the Liverpool line-up up until the 1909-10 season. He made 121 appearances for the Merseyside club in his career before moving onto Manchester United. His United career never kicked off as he played just 4 times for the Red Devils after his move from Liverpool.
4. Peter Beardsley:
The incredibly talented winger Peter Beardsley signed for Manchester United from Vancouver Whitecaps but astonishingly made just one appearance for the Red Devils. After just an year, he returned back to Vancouver and was later signed by Newcastle United in 1983. He later became a house hold name on the Merseyside and England as he unveiled his potential in a Red shirt. However he had his best season with Bolton in 1997 in the twilight of his career.
5. Phil Chisnall:
Chisnall was one of the young players who grew up under Sit Matt Busby but failed to have an impact at the Old Trafford franchise. HE failed to live up to his potential and never cemented his place in the United line-up. He moved onto Liverpool where he made just 8 appearances and once again failed to live up to the hype that was created. He remains the last player to have transferred directly from United to Liverpool in a move that did not help his cause.
