It’s the big night! It’s the night when a champion will be crowned after a hard and long year where each individual showed why he deserves to be on that stage. The Ballon d’Or is the most prestigious individual honour for any footballer with legends like Zidane, Figo, Cruyff picking up that golden ball for their masterclass acts. And tonight too when three greats take the stage, they are already winners for having come this far!

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar have been shortlisted as the final three candidates for the Ballon d’Or and journalists from all around the world will be voting between them and choose the best player for the year 2015. It’s going to be tight between the three with all of them having a great run in the past year. But with many already naming Messi as the winner and subsequently picking up the award for the fifth time, we are here to tell you that we think otherwise. Messi has had brilliant 2015 winning the treble with the Catalans, but a certain Portuguese whose run with an ailing team is nothing short of brilliance. So here are 5 reasons why according to us Cristiano Ronaldo should be crowned the winner in Zurich.

Goal machine

It might be surprising but the Portuguese star has scored more goals in the 2015 calendar year than the duo from Barcelona. In his 59 games, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored a whopping 57 goals whereas Messi has scored 52 goals in 67 and Neymar has 45 goals to his name in 63 games. The Madrid forward hasn’t had a great season as compared to Messi and Neymar, having won nothing to account for his terrific goal scoring abilities. But that does not take away the fact that he has outclassed the Samba boys in this particular arena and deserves the award in our eyes. And if you think he gets lucky and scores easy goals then my friend you need to grow up, you don’t just get lucky on 57 occasions!

Do You need help? You got help!

The boy from Madeira was raised on family values and this reflects beautifully in his game always being ready to assist his teammates in scoring goals. You might think that the guy only scores goals and, of course, you are ready to flash the ‘penalty’ card in our faces (please refer to the above point), but that is not the entire truth. The ‘commander’ has provided 17 assists which is equal to the amount of assists provided by the Brazilian forward. To all those people who have been yapping how Ronaldo does not deserve to be in the top three, but Neymar sure has earned his position among the top three (rolling our eyes), we salute you!

He is the monster

There is no denying the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo boasts of a monstrous work rate with those runs and those jumps! In comparison to our South American boys, the Portuguese has scored goals at the rate of 0.97 goals per game. If that does not appeal to you then we have another fact to offer! Forwards take shots and shots are converted to goals and let us tell you who has taken more shots in the year, its Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo has taken 354 shots which shows how the 30-year-old man takes the attack to the opponents and keeps the opponent goalkeepers on their feet. If you were wondering how many shots Messi and Neymar have to their name, well its 307 shots for Messi and 212 shots for Neymar.

It’s an individual honour

The Ballon d’Or is an individual award, which is presented to the player who showcases exceptional talent in the course of 1 year. So what we cannot fathom is the fact that why on the basis on Barcelona’s treble that the award should be awarded to the men from Barcelona. Yes, they won the treble on the backs on the heroics of the three frontmen. But it was a combined effort and if trophy winning has to be taken into consideration then why not give the award to all three of them because then they deserve it equally. Ronaldo did not have the best team around him with key players being injured and warming the bench for a major chunk of the year. Look back to the time under a champion manager and a functioning team, they won the La Decima. We rest our case!

It’s Cristiano Ronaldo!

The name is enough! The man created records that will take a long time to be broken. From scoring the most number of goals in a Champions League season to being Real Madrid’s highest ever goal scorer. The man is already a legend in our eyes and he still has a lot to give to the game. The man takes every game as the biggest game of the season and celebrates penalties with the same enthusiasm as a free kick, which shows the hunger and drive of that man.

And saluting that drive and passion we hope that the Portuguese pick up the award for the third time!

*Fingers crossed*
