5 talking points from Manchester United’s Community Shield victory

Manchester United have gotten off to the best possible start to their domestic campaign as they managed to get the better of Leicester City, the Champions of England with a  2-1 victory in the Community shield on Sunday. Jesse Lingard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were on target for the Red Devils while Jamie Vardy opened the scoring for Leicester City which was not enough come the end of the game. It is a morale booster for the whole United squad along with Mourinho who will love for his team to keep the momentum going into the next season. Here are 5 talking points from this game:

  1. One shot, one goal, one trophy and one Zlatan:

The Swedish international was sensational in his debut game for United when he scored an acrobatic goal just 4 minutes into his debut for the club. However, he took a bit longer in the game against Leicester City as but he managed to steer home a header late in the game to break the dead-lock as he put United in the lead that was enough to seal the victory. Zlatan has already has his effect on the team and his goal, with his first shot on target was enough to give Mourinho his first United title. He will be hoping that more will follow in time.

  1. Why is Marouane Fellaini still a United player?

Jose Mourinho is not known for giving players who don’t deserve a chance, a place in his starting XI. But one Fellaini would have been over the moon having given a start in the game against Leicester City. Though he was a menacing presence in the midfield, Fellaini’s mistake in the game cost them the goal and if it was not for Zlatan, United may well have let the Community shield slip away. The Belgian is a utility player who may have a place in the squad but after his recent performance, and with Pogba coming in, Fellaini hardly has any place at the Old Trafford next season.

  1. Jesse Lingard- the surprise package this season.

The youngster has now scored the last goal in Louis van Gaal’s era and the first one in Jose Mourinho’s era at United, and both of them in a winning cause. Lingard showed his class at times in the previous season but his best performance game in the FA Cup final where he helped his side to a victory over Everton. He was once again sizzling in the final third while his amazing solo-run into the Leicester City box gave Untied the lead on the night. He is slowly growing in confidence and will only become a better player the more game time he gets under Jose Mourinho and is currently an important player for United in this season.

  1. Eric Bailly looks promising:

The new summer purchase from Jose Mourinho was pushed into the first team early in the season after an injury to Chris Smalling, the first choice center back at the club. And he showed some great promise going into the next season and showed no nerves playing the English champions on Sunday. He looked calm and composed when needed but is not shying away from crunching tackle, making him a great suit for United next season. Once Smalling is back into the squad, Bailly will be expected to partner him in defense for most of the season.

  1. Leicester City still have the bite:

Though Claudio Ranieri lost star player N’Golo Kante to Chelsea this summer, he has the major chunk of his title-winning side at his disposal this season and has also added some exciting prospects to his squad in the form of Ahmed Musa. The manager has got the team playing a similar kind of football from the previous season and was unlucky to end up on the losing side after putting in a decent performance against the Red Devils. Though they lost the game, Leicester City showed enough fight and class to promise yet another season of smiles for the fans of the club. It is to be seen, however, if they can challenge for a European spot in the upcoming season.
