Manchester United have started their Premier League season with a thumping 3-1 victory against Bournemouth in the season opener. The Red Devils went into the game with lot of pressure as Jose Mourinho is expected to deliver after bringing in lot of reinforcements this summer.
However, Red Devils have not managed to be their best during first half despite Mata clinching the opening goal. In the second half, Manchester United have dominated the proceedings before winning the game with 3-1. Here we look at the five takeaways from the game.
1. Should Mourinho sell Mata?
Juan Mata was one of the first players expected to be sold under Jose Mourinho as the pair have not had a great time at CHelsea before the player moving to Old Trafford. The Spaniard has been an important player under Louis van Gaal during the last two seasons.
However, the player was expected to leave but Mata has proven his class under Jose Mourinho and with his performances, he is seriously putting Mourinho under pressure to take him into the first team. The 28-player old has capped off his performance with a goal in first half.
2. Eric Bailly- The brightest spot in United defense
One of the four signings this summer under Jose Mourinho, Eric Bailly is living up to the expectations he is expected of. The young defender has been in fine form against Leicester City in Community Shield have continued his form to Bournemouth.
Bailly was awarded the player of the match after his impressive rock-solid performance at the back.
3. Jose Mourinho implementing Chelsea like playing style?
The new manager has made a huge difference to the side with his signings this summer but Manchester United playing style have not been up to the mark. The Red Devils have defended deeply and have to rely heavily on counter attacks.
The side didn’t look so dominant as they lost balls so cheaply and had very less possession which should be an area of concern going forward as they should change their playing style.
4. Can Wayne Rooney be effective this season?
The Red Devils captain Wayne Rooney have not his form in the season opener against Bournemouth despite scoring a goal. Playing as a No.10, Rooney who has the responsibility of leading the attack with his passing and skills have often failed miserably throughout the game.
However, Rooney has found ways at times before being subbe off after 88 minutes. The captain needs to up his game if he were to form a deadly duo with striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
5. Zlatan Ibrahimovic- The right man for Manchester United
One of the major problems Manchester United have faced under former manager Louis van Gaal was the lack of threat in front of goal as they did not have a great striker. But since the arrival of Zlatan, the Red Devils is looking lot different than the past three seasons.
The Swede has made an immediate impact as he has already scored on his Manchester United debut, Community Shield and now in season opener which all three goals making the headlines for the acrobatic skills he possess. Zlatan will play a very important role in Manchester United’s aspirations for Premier League title this season.
