The Blues have suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, putting in woefully poor performances in both games against Liverpool and Arsenal, with defence certainly looking the biggest worry.

With ageing captain John Terry out injured, Conte fielded a centre-back pairing of Gary Cahill and summer signing David Luiz for both games, and they were badly found wanting against top quality opposition.

Chelsea were linked with some big-name signings in defence for much of the summer, but notably missed out on their top targets such as John Stones and Leonardo Bonucci.
