Manchester United completed the most talked about the transfer in this window on the deadline by signing him for a huge amount of £36 million which could increase to €80 million (£59m) with add-ons. It created a furore as the huge amount was paid for a 19-year-old unknown teenager who just scored 10 goals in the Ligue 1.
Most recently Manchester United captain star striker had asked about who Martial was as he had no idea about his club’s most expensive signing. Morgan Schneiderlin had enlightened Rooney with details about the French prodigy.
When reporters asked him about Rooney’s gesture he said: “It’s normal that he [Rooney] does not know me.
“I have not played in Ligue 1 a lot and this is the first time I’m in the France team. But I’m happy to go there. He is a great player and I will progress a lot with him.”
“I don’t know if I’m worth €80 million. I do not think about the amounts. The amount is between the two clubs. I do not put myself under particular pressure.”
At £36m, Martial becomes Manchester United most expensive striker ever and, at £58m, he would become the second-costliest signing in Premier League history. To this Martial responded: “Sure it’s crazy enough for a player of my age. This is the football market and I can not help it, it’s between the two clubs. I try to ignore and concentrate only on the field.”
Anthony Martial is still not sure if he would start as the main striker or play a second fiddle to Wayne Rooney.
About his conversation with new boss Louis van Gaal, Martial suggested: “He asked me what position I prefer playing. I replied in the middle, but he told me I could play in several positions.
“I’m available to the coach and to give the best in any position.”
