Cesc Fabregas has finally displayed the form that made him such a big hit at Chelsea a couple of years ago when he helped the Blues to win Premier League and League.
Yet to start a Premier League game this season, the Spain international was finally given a chance to prove his worth when Antonio Conte included him in the starting eleven for the EFL tie against Leicester City. And the midfielder grabbed the opportunity with both hands. He scored two goals in added time to help Chelsea defeat the reigning Premier League champions 4-2 after being down 2-0. Fabregas also provided an assist during his impressive display at the Kingpower Stadium.
Conte had little faith in Fabregas but the latest display is bound to change his views towards the former Barcelona and Arsenal player. The Italian tactician looked pleased with Fabregas’ performance and heaped lavish praise on him.
“Cesc is Chelsea’s player, I am happy about him, for his attitude and his behaviour during training sessions,” Conte told a post-match news conference.
“In my opinion, he’s improving a lot in many aspects, above all the defensive situations.
“I’m very clear with my players: when a player deserves to play, I put him in the team.”
Fabregas’ former club Arsenal are up next in Saturday’s London derby at the Emirates Stadium.
Chelsea will play Arsenal next and when the manager was asked about Fabregas’ possibility of playing the match, he said: “All the players in my squad have the possibility to play against Arsenal. There are three days before the game and they have the opportunity to show me during the training sessions – to convince me to put them in.
“I want my players to create good competition and game by game give me the opportunity to choose the best line-up.”
