Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio is the latest central defender being considered by Arsenal as Arsène Wenger desperately tries to bolster his backline before the transfer window closes next week.
According to reports in The Telegraph, the 25-year-old centre-half is on an Arsenal shortlist of just three targets along with Roma’s Kostas Manolas and the other one is most probably Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.
The Gunners have only three fit central defenders in the senior squad at the present moment, and they are desperately trying to add another to their squad as soon as possible. Injuries to club captain Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista has weakened their defence and the Gunners were compelled to play young defender Rob Holding in the opening game against Liverpool.
The Telegraph reported that the Gunners boss was weighing up a £12 million move for the 25-year-old Argentine at the start of the summer but a bid was never lodged with the La Liga outfit and his price is expected to have gone up since then.
Wenger has always been reluctant to spend big amount but his side’s dismal performance in the first two Premier League games has compelled Wenger to admit that he is ready to splash the cash.
Musacchio, who impressed in last season’s Europa League, previously partnered Gabriel in La Liga and has spent seven years with Villarreal.
With Wenger becoming frustrated by his inability to land a defender, perhaps the Argentine will be signed by the North London club.
