According to latest reports, Arsenal’s veteran midfielder Mikel Arteta is ready to sign a new contract which will keep him at Emirates Stadium until the end of next season. The 32-year old has been out of action for nearly three months after his injury back in November.
The Spanish midfielder runs out of contract at the end of the current season and was earlier expected to leave the Gunners in the summer transfer window for free. However, Gunners Boss Arsene Wenger wants the midfielder to stay at Emirates despite offering the midfielder only 7 premier league appearances this season.
With the mid-fielder turning 33 this month, he might become slow and have already been less efficient in winning tackles. However, the veteran would maintain composure and bring calmness to central midfield in crucial matches with his experience which Arsenal are missing this season.
Arteta also plays a fundamental role in keeping the team ticking over and retaining possession and his calmness would benefit Gunners as a few experienced players in the squad will do good to them.
The veteran cannot expect a regular first team position with Wenger considering a possible targets for Central midfield and defensive midfield. The midfielder has won only 38% of tackles and has created a mere 3 chances in his seven Premier League appearances for Gunners this season.
