It has now been reported that north London giants Arsenal are monitoring the status of Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain, as they look to sign a “world-class” striker at the end of the current campaign, according to Football Insider sources. The Gunners are keen on reinforcing their squad and will look to add yet another star striker to their squad as soon as possible, after being knocked out of the FA Cup and the Champions League in recent times.

Arsenal were beaten by the reigning champions of Spain and Europe, Barcelona in the round of 16 on Wednesday night, just a few days after their domestic rivals Watford eliminated them from the FA Cup, which they had won consecutively for the last couple of years.

The north London giants barely have any chances of winning silverware this term, as they find themselves currently 11-points behind league leaders Leicester.

Arsene Wenger failed to sign a new top class striker after chasing Karim Benzema and Edinson Cavani last summer and will now look to add yet another “30-plus goals a season” attacker, when the transfer window opens once again.

Previously, the French manager had tried to sign Higuain from Real Madrid in 2013, though he chose to move to Napoli instead and is at the moment a key player for them.

Despite that, the 28 year old superstar has not yet had talks about a contract extension and his current deal expires in 2018.

Further, Chelsea and Liverpool are also closely monitoring the star and will push to make a deal go through, after failing to win much themselves this season.

It will be quite interesting to see which club Higuain ends up at eventually, though speculations have suggested that he is wanted by a host of European giants as he is still a top player in the continent.
