According to reports from major English media outlets, Arsenal are ready to swoop for Olympiakos defender Kostas Manolas as a replacement for Thoms Vermaelen, the latter who joined Barcelona for a £15m deal. It is believed that Arsene Wenger is desperate to sign a centre back, who would give ample cover to the first choice pair of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. However Juventus and Roma are also interested 23 year old. Roma fear that they might lose Mehdi Benatia to Chelsea and hence are taking no chances to sign a quality replacement.

Manolas featured for Greece in the World Cup in Brazil and was named in the top 50 players of the tournament. Arsene Wenger had earlier stressed on the importance of a centre back after his side registered an emphatic 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield, “If I can find another centre back I will do it. I’m very happy (with our business) and I’m still open to doing more.”

Wenger is also interested in Liverpool’s Daniel Agger, the Dane who has fallen the pecking order at Anfield as Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and new signing Dejan Lovren all preferred to the 29 year old. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers however has clarified that he hasn’t received any such offer for the Denmark captain.
