Arsenal To Appoint Ajax Man In A Role That Does Not Exist This Season At The Emirates

London outfit Arsenal are set to go through wholesale changes this summer.

They are currently at the sixth place in the points table and are not getting closer to a place in the Champions League.

They might lose Arsene Wenger at the end of the season while the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are also yet to extend their contracts with the club.

Arsene Wenger is reportedly offered a two-year extension on his current contract and the manager may yet be signing the deal, to extend his 20-year stay at the Emirates.

And reports today suggest that he is set to introduce the club to something he has never done in his two decades at the club.

According to Daily Mail, Arsenal are thinking about appointing a director of football for the club to oversee transfers and footballing ethos as the club looks to restructure and enter the modern era of the sport.

The French manager has always had the final say in regards to spending transfer funds and has often been criticized for lack of spending in the windows.

But it is now understood that they are ready to appoint a sporting director who will be responsible for all such decisions.

The 3-0 defeat at the Selhurst Park may have dented their chances of qualification for Europe but Arsenal have already compiled a list of names who could take this job.

The report from the Daily suggests that former winger Marc Overmars is the prime candidate for this position.

Overmars had a fruitful stint at the Emirates, winning a double just before the turn of the century and has been working for the Dutch giants Ajax in a similar position since retirement.

He has plenty of experience in this field and has done some wonderful work in Netherlands and Arsenal are reportedly desperate to make him their first director of football at the Emirates.

Michael Zorc, the man at the Signal Iduna Park, is also another name that is doing the rounds but Overmars is currently the leading contender for the job next season.

Having never appointed anyone in that position, it will be interesting to see if this is a step towards relieving Wenger of the pressure or if it is the fact that they do not trust the Frenchman in the windows, is to be seen.

Arsenal have been linked to some of the biggest stars in Europe recently and Overmars can surely help them get a couple of them to sign for the Gunners.

But do Arsenal really need a sporting director?
