According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Arsenal are ready to make a second attempt to sign William Carvalho from Sporting.

Arsenal’s initial bid of €30 million was rejected by Sporting as they want the payment in one go and not in several installments. Arsenal are hoping to finish the negotiations before the weekend. Sporting want to keep their star player, but a bid from a top Premier club will make it diificult for them. Earlier, Manchester United boss David Moyes wanted Carvalho at Old Trafford, but after his sacking United are no longer interested in the defensive midfielder.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed he is hoping to sign one or two players before the end of transfer window, but at the moment nothing is imminent.

“Who’s next? I don’t know,” Wenger said when asked about possible new arrivals. “There could still be one signing, maximum of two. If a good opportunity comes up we might still do it, but at the moment we are not close to signing anybody.”

Reports suggest that Arsenal have decided not to sign Real Madrid‘s Sami Khedira because of his wage demands and injury concerns. Real Madrid want £24 million for the German international and Khedira wants a £150,000-a-week deal at Emirates. Arsenal prepare themselves to face Manchester City in Sunday’s Community Shield and manager Arsene Wenger insists they are ready.

“We did well on Saturday against Benfica and had a great game, scored a lot of goals but on Sunday against Monaco there was another team who have had only three or four days of training,” said Giroud.

Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini. We could see it, especially for me – it was really hard for me physically and I didn’t feel really well in the game but it is OK as I have this week to work because we have to be ready against City.

“I have asked to work hard [in training]. For pre-season preparation you have to work hard and there is less than one week to be ready.”
