Arsenal players and fans were over the moon when they knew that Monaco will be their opponents in the round of 16 clash in the Champions League. Aaron Ramsey had arrogantly tweeted, “Well Monaco, our fans would love a trip to Monaco won’t they?” Not sure about that Aaron now as Arsenal were give a huge reality check by the French side and beat them 3-1 at Emirates.
Arsenal will travel to Monaco in three weeks with an almost impossible task of overturning the deficit of 3 away goals. We look back at some of the key talking points from the game at Emirates where Arsenal were beaten fair and square by Arsene Wenger’s former club AS Monaco.
Arsenal PLAYERS underestimated Monaco
Arsenal have been knocked at the very stage of the tournament for last 4 seasons in a row. Draw has not been particularly kind to them either. They have faced AC Milan, Barcelona and then Bayern Munich for last 2 seasons. So when Monaco came around, Arsenal players saw an easy pass to the Quarter Finals of the Champions League and it backfired big-time.
Credit to Monaco, they had Arsenal worked out
If you win 3-1 away in the Champions League, you must have a plan and it worked big-time for Monaco. Monaco’s win cannot be entirely blamed on Arsenal being overconfident, it was down to Monaco’s well planned tactics. Monaco squeezed Arsenal’s supply from the midfield. Cazorla, Ozil were not given time on the ball at all and whenever Monaco had the chance they switched the play wide and attacked Arsenal’s WEAK FULL BACKS.
Dimitar Berbatov, Joao Moutinho and Martial were the outstanding performers for Monaco on the night.
Mesut Ozil has become a £40 million liability at the club
It has not worked for the German ace since moving to Emirates for a hefty £40 million price-tag. One of the major criticisms of Ozil is his lack of effort on the pitch. Yes he is a very stylish player and can create openings out of nothing but he has not been doing it enough for anyone’s liking. Ozil’s sluggish body language makes him an even greater liability for the club.
Tie is beyond Arsenal’s reach now
It is not an overstatement, I can’t see Arsenal comeback from this. Arsenal need to go to Monaco and manage 3 goals at bare minimum to be in contest. 3 goals without reply will take them through or if the score line replicates itself and game ends 3-1 at full time, we will have extra time and penalties, if needed.
But I can’t see it happening. Monaco have only conceded 4 goals in their 7 Champions League games this season and boast a strong defence. Arsenal can kiss Champions League good bye this season and try next year.
Whole Europe will start scouting Monaco players now
AS Monaco might not have the stars once they had couple of seasons ago but they have a great bunch of talented players. To start with Joao Moutinho, he can make any side’s midfield look classy. Fabinho, Kondogbia, Martial what a display by these players in the night. Perhaps the man who sealed the tie for Monaco, Carrasco already has a huge market value and after his goal last night it has definitely increased. I expect lots of bids for these player in the next transfer window.
