Transfer Deadline Day is here and Arsene Wenger is having some fun with it. Arsenal, for a change, did their transfer business earlier in the window when they wrapped up the deal for defensive midfielder Mohamed Elneny from FC Basel and it was expected that the transfer window for the Arsenal fans was done and dusted there. Arsenal are not in an immediate need to sign a player and it will be better for the Gunners to wait for the transfer targets till the summer when they are more likely to switch teams.
Arsenal take on Southampton tomorrow in the Premier League and Arsene Wenger had his press-conference today. Naturally, he was asked about the further transfers at Arsenal today to which he replied with a gem:
“99 percent No, You can’t be 100% sure If Messi knocks on my door at 5.50pm I will not say ‘please go back to Barcelona’.”
Wenger also hinted that he would have liked to make another signing but did not find the right player.
“If possible, I would have been open to one more but there is a rarity of players.”
Earlier this month Wenger had said that people should expect a “busy” January for the Premier League clubs but so far the opposite has happened and Wenger agreed with it. “The whole period was much quieter than I expected. The fact that we are all here means it is still quiet.”
Well, jokes apart, Arsenal are close to finalising two departures from the club although both are expected to be loan deals. First up, frustrated defender Mathieu Debuchy is likely to sign for another Premier League club on loan while German U21 international Serge Gnabry will also be loaned out to a Championship team after he was recalled from a failed loan spell with West Bromwich Albion.
