Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that even though he believes Anthony Martial as a talented youngster, he ignored the French lad as he had Joel Campbell already in the squad.

Anthony Martial joined Manchester United on the transfer deadline day this season for world record transfer fee for a teenager. The Red Devils paid 36 million Pounds to get hold of the player from AS Monaco. If the add-ons of the deal are considered then the transfer fee sums up to 80 million Euros which is huge.

Martial has already grabbed eyeballs as he scored 3 goals in his first two Premier League appearances the first one being scored against rivals Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger now has claimed that Arsenal was the team to be linked with the youngster first, but the French manager decided not to sign him as he had several other star players in his squad.

Wenger revealed that he considered Anthony Martial to be a winger and as Arsenal already have players Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez and Joel Campbell in the position, Martial never came to his mind.

Wenger was quoted saying: “We have known him since he was a kid. But he’s more of a winger-type, He’s an exceptional talent I agree with you but I believe that he plays in positions where we have players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez and Joel Campbell who can play in the position.”

Over the years, Arsene Wenger has earned a reputation of spotting world class talents and making them superstars. The likes of Theirry Henry, Robert Pires, Freddie Ljungberg and many others were brought into the club by the French man and those players even won him an invincible Premier League title which is an unique feat for any manager.

But, Wenger has also missed out on signing some of the big names in world football, which includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Yaya Toure, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gareth Bale.

All these world class superstars were linked with the Gunners at some point of time but for some reason, Arsene Wenger miserably missed out on signing these footballers.

Anthony Martial has been compared already with France legend Theirry Henry who was also one of the greatest player ever in the Premier League era. Martial has definitely impressed many by his goal scoring ability.

Even Henry himself praised the young lad on his stellar debut performance against Liverpool and former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson even backed the striker and said he was not over priced.

Only time will tell if Arsene Wenger is yet again mistaken in spotting a world class. For now Manchester United can cherish on buying such a talent.
