Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he tried but failed to sign AS Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe last summer.
Mbappe is one of the highly rated youngsters in Europe as the Frenchman has been in sensational form for the Ligu 1 outfit this season making him one of the hottest prospects in the upcoming transfer window.
The 18-year old has already scored 13 goals for Monaco so far this season and could be set for a big money move as a host of big European clubs are closely observing him.
Wenger, whose side has recently took a 5-1 battering in the hands of Bayern Munich, has revealed that he made an approach for the youngster last summer but Mbappe has decided to stay put at the French outfit.
‘I approached him last year because I really believe that he has an exceptional future ahead of him,’ revealed Wenger.
‘Unfortunately today, all these young players are in full view from very, very early on and all the big clubs want them.
‘I hope the fact that everybody is already talking of nobody but him isn’t going to have a negative impact on his future.’
The 66-year old has also likened him to Thierry Henry as he revealed that there is a lot in common with the two French strikers.
‘He reminds me of a young Thierry Henry with the same clever look about him.
‘They have the same qualities of intelligence in his movement and finishing.’
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger will be hoping to impress in their sixth round FA Cup tie with Lincoln City this weekend after their poor displays in the Champions League against Bayern Munich.
Arsenal will now hope to win the FA Cup as they look favorites to reach the semi-finals and they will also target the top four positions by the end of the season which could help them win Champions League football next season.
