According to latest reports, Spanish outfit Athletic Bilbao have renewed their interest in Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal. The Spanish club transfer policy reflects that they sign only players native to the Baque Country or neighbouring regions.
Monreal have failed to break into first team since his move to Arsenal back in 2013 and has always been below Gibbs in the pecking order. With Gibbs injured this season, Monreal got some starts this season but the 29-year old is expected to be benched once Gibbs returns from injury.
However, Athletic club have failed to secure top-4 finish this season which will see them not feature in Champions League next season. This might play a role in player’s decision to move to Spanish club as Arsenal have secured 3rd spot in Premier League.
Athletic Bilbao president have earlier confirmed their interest in Monreal and few others as he said,
“There was interest from Athletic in players, although it was focused on Illarramendi. There are not so many players: [Asier] Illarramendi, Raúl García, [Nacho] Monreal, [César] Azpilicueta.
“We have to be aware, monitoring– whether they continue at their clubs [or not], it’s because they are interesting.”
A move to Athletic Bilbao meant that Monreal will get quality first team football but will miss Champions League next season.
