Atletico de Kolkata today announced former Atletico Madrid and Liverpool winger Luis Garcia as their marquee player.

Luis Garcia enjoyed his best career days at Anfield, where he won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FA Cup. He also scored the famous “ghost goal” against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. Luis Garcia enjoyed a special relationship with Liverpool fans and they honoured him with the chant: “Luis García, he drinks Sangria/he came from Barça to bring us joy!/He’s five-foot seven, he’s football heaven/So please don’t take our Luis away!”

Garcia scored 30 goals in 121 appearances for Liverpool, most of them were decisive goals. Luis Garcia announced his retirement from football earlier in January this year. Today, Garcia left a message for Atletico de Kolkata fans on Facebook and Twitter.

“I’m very exited to share with you my new challenge , I’ve decided to join Athletico de Kolkata in the new Indian Super League. Thanks for all your support.”

Antonio Lopez Habas has been announced as the head coach. Atletico de Kolkata also unveiled its team jersey together with the official logo. They also launched the official Facebook fan page and other social media platforms.

The Indian Super League is the name of a new, proposed football league in India by IMG-Reliance (a joint venture of IMG andReliance Industries) and the All India Football Federation. It is set to kick-off in September 2014 and finish its first season in November of that year. The league is expected to be competed by eight franchises with each team featuring one major marquee player and marquee manager. Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is also a co-owner of one of the ISL teams. Leading Bollywood actors Salman Khan, John Abraham and Ranbir Kapoor are also co-owners of different ISL teams.
