According to reports in Spanish outlet Don Balon, La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have told Arsenal they can sign Jose Gimenez – only if they offer their star player Alexis Sanchez.
Manchester City are said to be keen on the Uruguayan and their financial muscle would certainly force the Gunners out of any deal.
The Champions League runners-up are keen to keep hold of the promising young centre back and he could cost upwards of £40 million. So it seems that the only way for Arsenal to sign the defender is that they include Sanchez in the deal.
And that is a proposition that Arsenal are unlikely to entertain.
The Chile international is arguably Arsenal’s most vital player and has been a revelation since moving to England from Barcelona. Arsenal’s defence is in shambles and injuries to defenders Per Mertesacker and Gabriel has made the condition worse at the club. Undoubtedly the Gunners fans will be keen to see a major defender signed before the transfer window closes at the end of August – but not at the expense of Sanchez or any of their big stars.
