According to reports, Liverpool hold “realistic and productive” talks with Barcelona over the transfer of Luis Suarez.

Liverpool and Barcelona officials met in London yesterday to open negotiations for signing star striker Luis Suarez.  Barcelona have offered £60million for the Liverpool striker, but Liverpool value him at £80million. No player exchange was offered to Liverpool, but Liverpool are keen on Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez and want to make him a part of the deal.

An Anfield source said: “The talks were productive with sensible expectations on both sides.

“Further talks and discussions will take place in due course. Nothing is finalised as of now.”

CEO Ian Ayre has told Barcelona that Suarez will be sold only on Liverpool’s terms. According to reports, Liverpool are ready to accept £45million plus Alexis Sanchez, but the Chilean attacker favours a move to Arsenal.

Earlier, Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta told the reporters of his admiration for Luis Suarez.

“Suarez has shown he is humble enough to admit an error, which is very important,” he said.

“He has been humble enough to apologise to those he has affected because it happened in the middle of a festival of football. In this case it’s the best thing a person can do.

“Everyone knows that Luis is an excellent player. Everyone knows last season he played in various positions in attack, but everyone also knows that he is a Liverpool player.”

Croatia midfielder Rakitic added: “The fact he has had the character and the strength to go in front of everyone and say sorry says a lot about him as a person.

“I rarely say that I am wrong so this says a lot about him, he has shown the character and strength he has so he should be commended for that.

“Regardless of whether the club signs him or not, his quality is unquestionable. He has shown a lot of quality with Uruguay and scored more than 30 goals (last season) with Liverpool, so he has the necessary quality to play for Barca.”

Earlier, FIFA announced that Luis Suarez has been banned for nine games and from all football for four months. Fifa also issued stadium ban against Luis Suarez. He cannot attend any football match and is fined 100,000 Swiss Francs. An appeal can be lodged. Its very likely Luis Suarez will appeal against the ban. Suarez and Chiellini clashed in the 79th minute of the game, television replays showed Suarez has headbutted the Italy defender before going down Chiellini then accused him of biting his shoulder. The referee didn’t see anything, Chiellini kept showing him bite marks but the referee refused to take any actions.
