Barcelona Player Ratings From A Failed Attempt To Produce Another Miracle

Juventus produced an exceptional defensive performance to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League after stopping Barcelona from scoring at the Nou Camp.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Barca peppered the Italian goal but failed to repeat their last-16 heroics when they overturned a first-leg 4-0 deficit to beat Paris St-Germain.

Lionel Messi, who had earlier been denied by Gianluigi Buffon, fired wastefully over the bar while Luis Suarez and Neymar also spurned chances on a night Barca were restricted to one shot on target.

Juve’s Gonzalo Higuain fired tamely at Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Juan Cuadrado missed another chance but the final whistle was celebrated wildly by the champions of Italy, who have not conceded a single goal from open play in this season’s Champions League.

The champions of Italy are 180 minutes away from the final in Cardiff on 3 June after a superb defensive performance as Barca and their formidable strike force failed to score over two legs.

Juventus join Manchester United (2007-08) and Bayern Munich (2012-13) as one of only three teams that have stopped the Catalans scoring in both legs of a Champions League tie.

Here are the player ratings for Barcelona:

TER STEGEN (7) A good performance. No notable errors, made the saves he had to make and was quick to get play moving.

SERGI ROBERTO (7) Played well on the right of the back four, adding an attacking threat and comfortable on the ball. Had one chance, curling a left-footed effort wide before being taken off, exhausted.

PIQUE (7) Committed performance from Pique, who led from the back. Kept Higuain out and also added a lot going forward, building attacks.

UMTITI (8) Brilliant game from the French defender, who didn’t leave Dybala alone. Top anticipation and good on the ball.

ALBA (7) Allowed Neymar into the game more and created Barça’s best chances in the first half. Came close to scoring from brilliant Messi assist.

SERGIO BUSQUETS (7) A decent showing, above all in terms of intelligence and recovering the ball. Passed well and was not caught out.

RAKITIC (6) A serious performance from the Croatian, who also had a chance from the edge of the area. His work without the ball was more important than work with it.

INIESTA (7) A 10 for attitude. Showed some great footwork but lacked a little in the final third.

MESSI (7) Never hid, but wasn’t his night in front of goal. Had three good chances, but none hit the target.

LUIS SUÁREZ (6) Wasn’t involved a lot against a strong Juve defence.

NEYMAR (8) The best of Barcelona’s attackers, regularly skipping past clusters of Juve players. Another great performance, although this time without the thrilling finale.
