Barcelona Release Statement In Support Of Lionel Messi After His International Ban

The international break is not of great help to the domestic season as it usually sees a number of crucial players pick up knocks on international duty.

But Argentina were hit with a huge suspension in this international break after their star striker Lionel Messi was banned for four international games, after his exchange with an official.

The Barcelona man is now not allowed to play in the next four games for Argentina, for his antics in the qualifier against Chile and FIFA are adamant that he needs to complete his ban and that he will not be excused.

It is understood that this ban is because the Argentine foul mouthed the referee during the game.

It is also revealed that the match referee, Sandro Ricci, initially did not mention the incident in his match report but later extended it to include Messi’s insults towards his assistant.

That was no it.

After the end of the game, Messi was seen harassing the linesman and refused to shake his hands, also constantly bad mouthing him.

This was clearly picked up by the cameras and saw FIFA take retrospective action.

Messi is now banned for the next four international game for Argentina and he cannot have too many complaints regarding this ban.

However, his Spanish club Barcelona have now come to his aid and have released a statement in support of him.

The Catalan club released the following statement:

“FC Barcelona expresses its surprise and indignation at the FIFA Disciplinary Commission’s decision to sanction Leo Messi, after the World Cup qualifier between Argentina and Chile. The club considers the sanction of four matches imposed on the player to be unjust and totally disproportionate. Finally, FC Barcelona wants to reiterate its support for Leo Messi, an exemplary sportsman on and off the pitch.”

This is not the first time that Messi has faced such allegations and was supported by his club.

Not so long ago, the Argentine was involved in a tax fraud case that saw him sentenced to a 21-month prison term.

Barcelona were quick to release a statement that time as well in support of the star striker.

Messi will be a huge loss to Argentina but he is allowed to play for the club and will be up and running this weekend.
