Barcelona Set To Make Sensational Move For Premier League Defender

La Liga giants Barcelona eye Southampton defender Cedric Soares as the solution to their right back problem, according to Daily Telegraph.

The Portuguese defender had joined Southampton in 2015 for just £5m and have grown into one of the best full-backs in the Premier League over the past two years. He has played to his strengths and has also been an integral part of the 2016 Euro winning squad.

The 25-year old is one of the best-attacking fullbacks in the league and Barcelona believes that he can be the ideal player for them as they are in the market to sign a new right-back this summer.

The Blaugrana has failed to replace Dani Alves in their starting lineup as the Brazilian left the club for free to Juventus. The likes of Aleix Vidal and Sergi Roberto have failed to fill in the big shoes of Alves as the position remains the only weak spot in their entire squad.

Barcelona are set to make a massive £25m bid to lure Southampton into selling the player in the summer as they are absolutely convinced that he could be the answer for their defensive problems.

However, Southampton are determined to keep hold off their stars as they have been losing their key players every summer. Recently club chairman Ralph Krueger has insisted that the Saints are not keen to sell players like Virgil van Dijk and few others as there has been growing interest from clubs across Europe. The Saints are determined to keep hold off the core of the squad as the team has been performing very well under Claude Puel.

Krueger said: “Virgil is very committed us for a long time and we don’t see anything but that in our future. He is our team captain and we don’t see him anywhere else than in red and white stripes.

“We don’t want to do what we did in the last three summers every year.

“We would like to move away from that and we feel confident this summer will be a lot quieter in Southampton and we can keep the core of this team moving forward for a few years.

“That is going to be important when you see how excellent the group is right now and how exciting the football is.

“The game we are playing is a pleasure to watch and a pleasure to be part of.”
