Benfica Star Explains Why He Snubbed Manchester United For PSG

Goncalo Guedes has explained why he decided to join PSG instead of Manchester United.

Manchester United were long-time admirers of Guedes but the 20-year-old decided to join PSG last week instead.

The Ligue 1 side paid £21million for his services and he signed a four-and-half-year deal keeping him in the French capital until 2021.

Guedes claims United was a strong possibility for him but never had any doubt over where he wanted to go.

“I always wanted to pick Paris, Guedes told RMC Sport.

“I know that English and French football are different but honestly, I think that for someone my age, for someone young, it was better to come to PSG because it’s a big club.

“Manchester would have helped me too, but I’d feel more at home here than in England.”

PSG’s signing of Guedes was their second piece of business in January following the transfer of Julian Draxler.

The Portugal international made his PSG debut on Sunday, coming off the bench in the 1-1 draw with Monaco.

It’s believed the club’s director of football, Patrick Kluivert, personally flew to Portugal to strike a deal with Benfica.

Guedes will not be eligible to feature for PSG in the Champions League because he’s already featured in the competition for Benfica.

Ever since he started dazzling in youth teams for club and country, Guedes has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo.

It’s a comparison the player himself says he does not care for, but there is no doubting his searing speed, directness and eye for the spectacular are reminiscent of Ronaldo in his teenage years.

On Nov. 6, 2015 Guedes was selected by Portugal coach Fernando Santos for the friendly against Russia, subsequently making his debut in Krasnodar.

It served only to further embolden the parallels being drawn between the two players. It was the first time an 18-year-old had made the cut for the national team since… Cristiano Ronaldo.

One aspect in which Guedes does differ from the Portugal captain is his preference for keeping a low profile.

Unlike the majority of today’s successful young footballers he is not blinded by fame, he has no tattoos, he doesn’t wear jewellery and he prefers to slip under the radar – at least off the pitch.
